The traceback method stores the ACS decisions in RAM. Later, the decisions are read out in reverse order. This allows the path to be traced back until the paths are expected to have merged. The issue here is that it takes several cycles to reach the point where the paths have merged. If new data is written every cycle, the contents of RAM would eventually be overwritten while the traceback process is running.
